Fire Liken
The Fire Liken series is a study in the containment of energy. In bold brush strokes and bold colors, the background fire sizzles through the dark into being. I began the series in 2005 with 10000 and have been refining/experimenting with it since. The series is best viewed in candlelight, where the figures dance off the walls.

Fill My Mouth With Butterflies
.
You pour down on me.
Loud, and my cheeks
fill up with air and fire.
My throat becomes butterflies
and all I know
and all I see and am
are structures
of their vibrations.

“Whoopie ti-yi-yo
Settle down, Magellan
Put down that axe
There’s no time to despair
Whoopie ti-yi-yo
Keep trying, Magellan
You’ll find the East Indies
You just don’t know where”

Heaven Beside Me
“I want to roll in it, to create
cloud angels in my own image and lead them…
and lead them down
the stairways of mountaintops,
each one singing a different note
- and our orchestra with great
procession will draw in the sky,
weaving in new words my life’s history
and I will no longer lie
or make mistakes or self-destruct.
In this world where we float down
ridges a thousand feet deep
I will write myself as happy
and let sound my joy into the amphitheater of the heavens.”

Defining Presence
.
though it took some time for him
to sizzle into being,
the recognition on her part was rather sudden.
his hands cupped her heart in wonder
and in his eyes,
all the imagined life she could give him fell.

10000
From you I come covered in butterflies,
who in their determined cacophony
of quivering wind and feathery slaps
envelop my calloused skin,
brittle with years of disbelief in human kindness.
Reproof to the nonexistence of love,
their tiny steps stir flowers from the sand
and paint it blush with disremembered sorrow.
Entranced in the roar of incandescent wings,
a choir full of voices pours from my mouth
in a frenzied rush of life breathing kisses.
I cherish the tickle, their velvety tongues,
singly in love with each and every one,
and you, as you are ten thousand.
