I’m also expanding on the Fire Liken series and exploring the feel of color and softer fire. And elsewhere, as always, I’m experimenting.

Public Art

Filaments

For Critical Massive MMX, a regional art festival, I created a sacred sound space among the trees. A space surrounded by cotton webbing and capped under a natural web with chimes and spiders and spiraled cascades pouring out of the trees, Filaments features a portal pedestal in the center topped with a marble ripple. The space is to harmonize with nature and to study a more subtle and quiet interaction with our environment. The space was very well received.

Crossroads – In Progress with the Iron Monkeys

For Burning Man 2010, we’re creating an 8′ high fire and water fountain flanked by 12′ steel columns that enclose a courtyard and sculpture gallery of invited artists. We’re leaving tomorrow!

——–

The Basement Art Studios

I’m currently working with a few other collaborators to turn an old basement in my apartment building in downtown Seattle into a resident art workspace with studios and community tables for painting and mixed media projects. It’s an exciting opportunity to bring affordable art space into Pioneer Square and create a community of artists.

We cover the world, shining like men o’war feeding off the same sea, trapped each of us in translucent isolation, unaware of our ability to move in the sun. I am not alone, here walking over the broken remnants of my psychological ancestors; on the horizons our silhouettes are ginger-stalking, throwing more of ourselves into our paths with each step of self-recognition recoil. So off to my brethren walking in the distance. So off to the sun.

Anew are nine life size sculptures constructed of paper mache and plaster bandage. The set was first constructed as a temporary meditation on existential awakening for INW’s Critical Massive in July 2009 and then installed as a guerilla art piece in Seattle’s Gasworks Park at the end of August. Gifted to Seattle and taken home by various people, many of the pieces still stand in gardens and homes across the city.

In 2009 I joined the Iron Monkeys, a blacksmithing collective with a specific purpose in creating pyrotechnic steel sculptures for Burning Man. Here is what we create:

———

Incunabulum

.

.

Incunabulum is the point of origin, the birthplace of the Universe. Here, it is cradled in a human hand – a symbol of our recognition of the universe as our consciousness expands past global awareness.

.

This sculpture was created in Seattle, WA by the Iron Monkeys. I was a new member to the team and helped with brainstorming, forging, fabrication, and test installations. Then we lit it on fire.

———

The Crossroads

This year for Burning Man we are building a courtyard – a place to restore your spirit during your journey. The courtyard will center around a three-tiered 10′ stainless steel fountain of water and fire. The interior area features three separate sand fire pits, benches, and a sculpture gallery of contributing artists from across the country. Our perimeter is created by six scrolled columns, each one lighting its vicinity with fire. We will be hosting a gallery opening on Thursday during the festival in addition to other events.

The Ghosts are portraits created in a highly textured, highly reflective environment. The series started with Bound, a commission, in 2006. It was a self-portrait, excepting physical resemblance, and with it began a pattern of painting the truth even when I didn’t want to or didn’t necessarily know what it was. As such, most of these are studies of my perception of my subject.

They are difficult to photograph and work very well in lowly lit rooms as the silver paints capture and reflect enough light that the figures glow.

This series of paintings evolved out of stepping on a small round mirror in 2001 and subsequently became an avenue for me to physically represent and experience a very shattered me. Breaking the glass was nearly the best part, smashing it inside a bag, then opening it like Christmas to find the pieces inside. I would wash the shards and arrange them in a frenzy, and often I’d suddenly discover my hands had been bleeding and I hadn’t even noticed. I believe… I believe I am done with these.

Filaments is about the tension between civilization and nature and learning to create vibrations that harmonize with the environment rather than destroy it. From running your fingernails along the cotton webbing and feeling the resistance of the trees to bandaging yourself into the forest to creating music with the various chimes, is was a chance to explore the subtlety of our relationship with the landscape in an impression of a shelter. The space was very well received.

The cascades, spheres, and carving are based on the idea behind the Spheres of Influence.

The Entrance into Filaments featured a set of chimes in an undulating upward scale set beneath a web that trailed down into the glen.

The Pedestal featured a half-submerged spider set on black glass. The spider’s ripples are carved of white marble. At night, it appeared to be water.
